Awards

By Update

A huge congratulations to all our athletes/officials/volunteers who were recognised in the annual Welsh Athletics Awards:

Our Chair Joyce Tomala was awarded the title of Services to Club Development, for her commitments to supporting the Youth Development League, competitions throughout East Wales, officials and clubs is fantastic. She works tirelessly supporting not only local league and regional competitions, but Inter-Regional and national competitions and supports the whole UK Youth Development League.

It was a clean sweep for Newport Harriers in the official awards category.
David Gilbert who has recently taken on the lead duties as a track and field official picked up the Newcomer to Officiating award. David has been instrumental in organising courses at the club, encouraging other parents and recruiting new officials to complete their level 1 qualifications.

The Official of the Year award was won by Jasmine Barraclough, for being unfailingly enthusiastic and resourceful and leads a team of officials and engages with athletes in an admirable way. Earlier this season Newport hosted a Midland league match, and this individual was field referee. Despite the many challenges during the day – often equipment focussed- she was pleasant and efficient throughout.

MERITORIOUS AWARD RECIPIENTS

  • Michael Heare (Islwyn Running Club) – in recognition of his invaluable contribution to the development of athletics in Wales.

Their contribution to athletics is immense and the East Wales Region and Welsh Athletics are proud to acknowledge their dedication to our sport.

Inter Regional Championships 16th July 2023, Aberdare

By Update

What an amazing day everyone had as East Wales won again! A huge congratulations to all the athletes who competed in Aberdare in the very interchangeable weather conditions. You should all be incredibly proud of yourselves! Both the boys and girls teams were overall winners and the trophies were collected by Jack and Sadie. This then meant that we won again by just shy of 100 points. A fantastic achievement!

We managed to secure 20 golds, 20 silvers & 13 bronze medals…..with 21 PB’s on route! Both Callum Webb (100m) and Lois Codling (800m) achieved Championship Best Performances. A massive well done to both!

Finally, a huge thank you to all the officials, volunteers and supporters who helped support the East Wales team in the lead up to the competition and on the day. The officials helped cover extra duties to ensure the day could carry on and run smoothly and we can’t say thank you enough.

Here’s to the next one.

Jeanette Jenkins – RIP

*Update

It is with deep sadness we announce that Jeanette Jenkins passed away on Monday 3 July.

Jeanette was a long standing member of Fairwater Runners Cwmbran and undertook many volunteering roles within the club. She was a competitive runner and as she developed coaching skills her race times improved and she represented East Wales on many occasions.

Jeanette was also responsible for organising and coaching at development days for the East Wales Endurance team, which were hugely successful for the region.

Jeanette also volunteered her time to the East Wales Regional Committee – she was Welfare Officer for many years and attended all the meetings, but additionally, helped to create the East Endurance Road Running Champs – even baking cakes for the meetings held in the initial setting up stage.

Competing, coaching and officiating – Jeanette also added Race Director to her repertoire. She organised events for Fairwater Runners, including the highly successful Rack Raid that teams from all across the region enjoyed immensely.

Many people in our athletics community will have been touched by her commitment and dedication to the sport, her loss will touch so many.
